Thanks to Scott Wilson from Thompson & Litton in Bristol Tennessee for these pictures and description of a King “Pratt Through Truss” Bridge design which dates back to 1885.   Scott writes:

"This bridge carried vehicular traffic (7 ton limit) until July of 2003.  The floor beams will be replaced this spring, and the bridge should re-open to traffic again in August 2004. T  he bridge carries two lanes of traffic and has sidewalk on each side.   The sidewalk is outside the truss structure and we are not sure if it was original or added at some point.

This particular bridge is located in the Town of Marion, Virginia approximately 45 miles north of the Virginia-Tennessee State line just off Interstate 81. It is officially called the East Chilhowie Street Bridge, but locally it is known as “Happy’s Bridge”."

Scott plans on taking photos during the restoration so we should be able to keep everyone current on the restoration and preservation of this beautiful King Bridge.  Thanks Scott!!
