MEXICO

On a recent trip to the mountains outside of Oaxaca, Mexico, Victoria McMackin discovered a bridge that is still standing.   Victoria reports:

"The plaque at the top of the bridge reads, "The King Bridge Company, Cleveland, Ohio, 1898

The road sign at the modern bridge which has bypassed the older bridge is “Puente Guelatao” located just before the town of Guelatao (whose claim to fame is being the birthplace of Benito Juarez). The guide we were with said the river it crosses has several names, one of which was Rio de la Sierra, but may not be the name it would have on a modern or older map.

I didn’t find a reference to this bridge on your website.  If you have any information on the history of this bridge, its construction, such as why it would have been brought in, I would appreciate knowing more about it.  The locals said that it was brought in by a “big machine” and set in place."

Thank to Victoria for providing this wonderful find "South of the Border" and including these two pictures.
